Iraqi journalist Suadad Al Salhy threatened with arrest over critical reporting

Since 1999, Ms Suadad Al Salhy has been covering politics and security in Iraq for several global news organisations. Since January 2020, she has been writing for the Middle East Eye.

In her career, Ms Al Salhy has covered some of the most important stories of the past two decades in the Middle East, including abuses committed by different parties in Iraq. Since 2003, she has been regularly receiving threats from multiple sides and was subjected to attempts of kidnapping and assassination.

On July 28 2015, LaithAnzi was on his way to his religious school, in Baghdad, to sit for an exam. At 11 am, while he was talking with his parents over the phone, Anzi informed them that he was at a checkpoint controlled by the Federal Police at Al Saydiya. He was then notified that he needed a sponsor in order to go through and enter Baghdad. He was on the phone with his parents for one hour until the phone line was cut off afterwards.

Sajjad Al Mishrifawi is a prominent activist who took part in the recent anti-government protests in the Dhi Qar governorate. He was subjected to threats, along with other demonstrators. The frequency of threats received by Al Mishrifawi had escalated in the three months prior to his abduction due to his peaceful activities, such as participating in protests and posting content critical of several political parties on social media.

Iraqi high school student disappeared since 2017

On April 28, 2017, Saif Abdullah was abducted by ISIL from his parents’ house in Al Mawsil Al Jadidah neighbourhood in Mosul. A few months later, on July 10, the city was liberated from ISIL by the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Units. Abdullah’s family believes that he was freed from ISIL by the Iraqi forces, who then abducted him alongside other detainees previously held by ISIL.

Iraqi daily worker Rasoul Al Janabi forcibly disappeared since June 2014

On June 17, 2014, Rasoul Al Janabi and his brother Omar were at their parents’ house in Madain, Baghdad when they were arrested by a group of Intelligence forces from the 42nd Brigade of the 11th Division of the Iraqi Army. While Omar was released five days after the arrest,Rasoul was accused, alongside other people, of bombing of two cars in the village of Brijan, Madain. Rasoul was never released, and his fate and whereabouts remain unknown.

On July 28,2014, Yahya Al Ezzawi was working with other construction workers at a building site in the Al Hayakil district, in the Ghazaliya neighborhood of Baghdad, Iraq. At around noon, he left the construction site to bring the other workers some lunch, but he never returned.

According to bystanders who witnessed the arrest, Al Ezzawi was arrested by joint forces of the Iraqi Army and Iraqi Federal Police, who were wearing their military uniforms.

Azad Mohammad Ali disappeared since 2006

On June 8 2006, Mohammad Ali was on his way to Al Mustansiriyah University in Baghdad when the driver of the taxi he was in dropped him off at the bus station in Hosseinia. There, members of the Federal Police arrested Mohammad Ali and took him to an unknown place. A grocery shopper witnessed the arrest and later informed the family.

The members of the Federal Police, who abducted Mohammad Ali, were wearing military uniforms at the time of his arrest. These forces operate under the Ministry of Interior.

On November 25, 2019, Talib Habib Al Ahmad, who normally resides in London, returned back to Basra to check in on his family’s land in the Abu Al Khaseeb district, Basra governorate. After arriving in Basra in the morning, he took a taxi to his friend’s house in Al Amitahiyah, where he stayed for the night.

On March 17, 2017, members of the Intelligence Department of the 16th Iraqi Army Division, wearing civilian clothes, raided Saif Al Islam Al Rifai’s mother’s house and abducted him. The next day, a picture of Al Rifai, handcuffed, was leaked on social media, but was later removed.

On May 12, 2017, while Monzer Al Mehdawi was working at his grocery store, unidentified members of the military, wearing uniforms, approached him and abducted him, before taking him to an unknown location. Al Mehdawi was last seen by one of his clients, who was at his store at the time of his arrest and witnessed his abduction.

Due to the uniforms worn by the perpetrators, Al Mehdawi’s family believe that he was abducted by members of the Iraqi army.
