Ebrahim Metwally is the co-founder and coordinator of the Association of the Families of the Disappeared, which provides the relatives of victims of enforced disappearance in Egypt with legal counselling, including through the submission of cases to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID). Metwally is the father of Amr Ibrahim Abdel Metwally Hegazy, who remains missing since his arrest on August 7, 2013, and whose case was submitted by his father to the WGEID.

In the morning of March 5, 2019, Ahmed Alakad was visiting a seriously ill friend at his apartment in Nasr City, Cairo, when, at around 10:30 a.m., a group of NSA officers wearing civilian clothes as well as police officers wearing uniforms raided the apartment without showing a warrant. An hour later, another group of NSA officers entered the apartment carrying weapons and video recording equipment. At around 2:30 p.m., Alakad and four other persons present in the apartment were handcuffed, blindfolded and escorted by the officers into police vehicles.
