Ahmed Alakad disappeared for over three weeks by Egyptian security forces

Ahmed Alakad was arrested on March 5, 2019 by members of the National Security Agency (NSA) and police officers. He was handcuffed, blindfolded and taken to an unknown location. Three weeks after his disappearance, his family was informed of his whereabouts by a former detainee. Alakad is currently in pre-trial detention in Tora prison.

In the morning of March 5, 2019, Ahmed Alakad was visiting a seriously ill friend at his apartment in Nasr City, Cairo, when, at around 10:30 a.m., a group of NSA officers wearing civilian clothes as well as police officers wearing uniforms raided the apartment without showing a warrant. An hour later, another group of NSA officers entered the apartment carrying weapons and video recording equipment. At around 2:30 p.m., Alakad and four other persons present in the apartment were handcuffed, blindfolded and escorted by the officers into police vehicles.

Later that afternoon, Alakad was handcuffed and escorted to his sister’s apartment in a police vehicle. The officers broke into and raided the apartment without showing a warrant, breaking several items of furniture. Following the raid, the NSA and police officers took Alakad to an unknown location, and his fate and whereabouts are unknown to date.

Following the arrest, several NSA officers broke into Alakad’s house in New Nozha, Cairo, while his relatives were out. During the raid, the officers broke many items of furniture and confiscated some of Alakad’s personal items. They did not show a warrant and did not provide any information about the reasons for the raid nor Alakad’s whereabouts.

On March 7, 2019, Alakad’s family sent telegrams to the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, the National Council for Human Rights, the general public prosecutor, the public prosecutor of Nasr City and the public prosecutor of El Abaseya, but did not receive any responses.

22 days after Alakad was arrested and disappeared, a former detainee advised the family that he was being held at the Police Department of Nasr City. Three days later, his relatives were allowed to visit him. Alakad has since been transferred to Tora Prison where he is currently detained. Alakad’s detention order is being repeatedly renewed and no trial date has yet been set.
